Last week, Kim from MHA sent me a article about Prince William and his mental health initiative called "Heads Together". I was surprised when I read that every single celebrity he approached to get involved basically blew him off. Prince William.... the future King of England... couldn't get people to support him. That is just crazy, and scary. Luckily he didn't give up and started the charity anyway in 2017 with his wife (love her) and Prince Harry. I absolutely love the first 2 paragraphs of their "About" section on their website:
"Too often, people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. This fear of prejudice and judgement stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. Heads Together wants to help people feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family.
Heads Together is a mental health initiative spearheaded by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which combines a campaign to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health with fundraising for a series of innovative new mental health services."
I wonder if it was tempting for Prince William to give up and not start his charity. I'm sure it is frustrating to approach people and have them in so many words tell you that they aren't interested in being associated with something that is very near to your heart. It has now become more common for celebrities to start talking about their mental health struggles. I'm not necessarily giving Prince William total credit for getting the conversation about mental health started, but I think that article really pointed out to me just how bad the mental health stigma was.
I saw another article about someone from North Carolina who created #EndTheStigma to advocate for mental health awareness. Since I'm not on social media, I don't know how popular this campaign has been, but I really like the idea. Read more about her initiative here.
